It's not always obvious. Sometimes it shows up as a tight chest before you walk through the door. Sometimes it's the thing you can't name but can feel in your shoulders. Abandoned in this context often disguises itself as something else. tiredness, irritability, withdrawal. The disguise is the reason you haven't addressed it yet.
