Shaking It Off. How It Works and When to Use It

Shaking It Off is one of those techniques that sounds simple but works on a deep neurological level. Here's exactly how it works, when to use it, and how to practice it effectively.

What shaking it off is

Shaking it off, sometimes called therapeutic tremoring, is a somatic practice where you intentionally shake your limbs and body to release stored stress and tension. You might bounce, shake out your arms and legs, or let a natural tremble move through you. It draws on the way animals shake to reset after a threat passes.

The technique doesn't need to be perfect. It needs to be practiced.

How it works in your nervous system

Stress mobilizes the body for action, and when that energy isn't discharged it can linger as tension and a stuck-on alarm state. Shaking gives that activation a physical outlet and signals to the nervous system that the threat is over. The movement helps complete the stress cycle, letting muscles release and the body shift back toward calm.

How to practice shaking it off

Start in a comfortable position. You don't need silence or solitude. just enough awareness to follow the steps.

The practice takes 2–5 minutes. Use it preemptively (before a stressful event) or reactively (during a spike in anxiety or tension). Track the before-and-after effect with a Therma mood check-in to see whether this technique reliably shifts your state.

How to practice

  1. 1
    Stand and loosen

Stand with feet about hip-width apart, knees soft. Give yourself room to move freely.

  2. 2
    Start with the hands

Shake out your hands and arms, fast and loose, as if flicking off water. Let it feel a little silly.

  3. 3
    Let the shaking spread

Add a gentle bounce in the knees and let the tremble move up through your legs, torso, and shoulders. Keep breathing.

  4. 4
Ride it for a minute or two

Continue for one to two minutes. You may feel a natural trembling take over. Let it, rather than forcing it.

  5. 5
Slow down and notice what shifted

Gradually still the movement and stand quietly. Notice the buzz draining out and where your body feels looser.

Common questions

How quickly does shaking it off work?

Most people notice a physiological shift within 60–90 seconds. Full nervous system downregulation takes 2–5 minutes. Consistent practice over 2 weeks improves both speed and depth of response.

Can I use shaking it off during a panic attack?

Yes, though it may take longer to feel the effect when your nervous system is highly activated. Start with the simplest version of the technique and focus on the physical sensations rather than "calming down." The body leads. The mind follows.

Is shaking it off backed by research?

Yes. The underlying mechanisms are well-documented in clinical psychology and neuroscience. Specific studies vary by technique, but the general principle. engaging the parasympathetic nervous system through structured practice. is one of the most robustly supported interventions in behavioral science.
