anger without a target
you're angry and you can't explain it. nobody did anything. nothing happened. but the anger is there, simmering under everything, making you short with people who don't deserve it. free-floating anger is disorienting because anger usually has a target. when it doesn't, you end up looking for one.
“untargeted anger is a hundred small moments that didn't get addressed. the storage is full.”
where untargeted anger comes from
anger without an obvious cause is usually accumulated anger that never got expressed. every time you swallowed a reaction, suppressed a boundary, or told yourself "it's not worth it," the anger went into storage. eventually the storage is full and it starts leaking.
the anger isn't about today. it's about a hundred small moments that didn't get addressed. it can also come from unmet needs: sleep, food, autonomy, respect.
how to find the source of anger you can't explain
write for ten minutes without stopping. " and keep writing even if it makes no sense. your conscious mind doesn't know the reason, but your subconscious does.
the writing gives it a channel. most people find the real source within a page or two. once you name it, the free-floating anger often collapses into something specific and manageable.

Common questions
why am I angry for no reason?
there is a reason. it's just not conscious yet. free-floating anger is usually accumulated suppressed emotions or unmet basic needs. writing freely about the anger usually surfaces the source within minutes.
is unexplained anger a sign of depression?
it can be, especially in men. depression often presents as irritability and anger rather than sadness. if the anger is persistent and doesn't respond to self-reflection, it's worth exploring with a professional.
how do I stop being angry all the time?
express the anger appropriately before it accumulates. speak up about the small things. set boundaries. physical exercise also helps discharge the energy. anger that gets moved through the body is less likely to leak onto innocent bystanders.
